Vintage Notes:
The grapes are given a 5-day cold soaking period and then fermentation is encouraged. Total maceration time including fermentation averages 25 days. Each vineyard lot is fermented and barrel aged separately; at minumum, prior to blending each will see 14 months in oak. Consistent with the production of all B Cellars wines, individual lots blended after they show their respective potential and we are able to discern how their specific terroir can contribute to the character of the overall blend. Once we are confident that each lot is imputing just the right balance of flavors, tannins and related characteristics, the blending team embarks on its arduous task of comparing numerous trial blends in search of perfection. The outcome is a Reserve blend of uncompromising quality that will stand up to the most sophisticated oenophile palate. After blending the wines are gently "racked" together and aged an additional 12 months in new French oak.
Harvest Notes:
Each respective vineyard is given the time for the fruit on vine to reach its optimum level of ripeness of both flavor and Brix. We carefully harvest early in the cool hours of the morning into half-ton macro bin boxes and make our way to the winery just as we hit the clearing of the mid-morning marine layer. The fruit is then vigilantly sorted to expose and remove any leaves or damaged fruit that may have made its way into the bin.
Winemaker Notes:
Blend #26 is truly a winemakers dream. When one has the opportunity to meld Beckstoffer's world renown George III and To Kalon Vineyards with the famous Stagecoach Vineyard, the vision of what will come is endless. This trio is "proof-positive" that Napa Valley's most premium vineyards are each producing incredible fruit in their own right and when carefully integrated, the result is phenomenal. Hours upon hours of assemblage takes place prior to determining the composition of this very special wine; hence, one could only say that Blend 26 brings the notion of "hand-crafted" to an art.
Just as the blending of two or more world-class wines can make an even more palatable potion, the uniting of two over-achieving entrepreneurs can create a union that is more effective than either one alone. When B Cellars' founder Jim Borsack first encountered his partner Duffy Keys at a fourth of July barbeque in 2002, both executives were exploring new life paths in the wine business. Over a drop of the good stuff, of course, their journeys became intertwined when they discovered that they not only shared the same tastes in wine but were also on parallel missions to acquire vineyard property. In the spring of 2003, they scrapped their solo endeavors, formed B Cellars, and got serious about structuring a first-rate wine company predicated upon two absolute principles: first, to produce exceptional artisan wines, season after season, by employing a multi-vineyard strategy, and second, to develop distinct flavors by blending wines from mutually complementary varietals. The B Cellars name and logo stand for a commitment to seasonless excellence. The letter 'b' and the degree symbol º refer to BRIX, a wine term which defines the optimal sugar/alcohol content in grape juice that indicates the potential for greatness.
